In general, a registered graduate student in good standing at any of the UC campuses is eligible for employment on a student academic title or casual-restricted position at another UC campus. Intercampus employment is different from the Intercampus Exchange Program and Visiting Graduate Student Program.

International Students

An international student in F-1 or J-1 status must receive work permission from the Home Campus Global Education Division before they can be employed at another campus.

Students from Other UC Campuses

When employing a student from another UC campus, the UC San Diego hiring department/fund source must contact the student’s UC Campus Home Department and UC Campus Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs to obtain approval and verify employment eligibility.  Combined UC employments can not exceed 50%. 

UC San Diego Students Working at Other UC Campuses

When another UC campus is employing a UC San Diego graduate student, the student’s UC San Diego Academic Home Department must verify eligibility and grant pre-approval of the employment.  Combined UC employments can not exceed 50%.  Students who work in graduate academic titles at 25% or more will be eligible for a fee remission. Contact Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs to coordinate the fee payment process between Campuses.  

Appointment Process

titleAs Host Campus
  1. Please review UC San Diego's Policy & Procedure Manual regarding Intercampus appointments 
  2. Complete the Temporary Intercampus or Multi-campus Appointment FormFor uniformity among campuses, the form will also be used to process the payment
  3. For proposed Associates-in (teaching a class) appointments, please also complete:
    1. Intercampus Applicant Student Information form (this information is gathered in lieu of what would normally be provided in the IA System)
    2. Academic Appointment Summary Form for Temporary Employees
  4. Contact the appointee’s Academic Home Department to obtain the required information in the Home Campus Information section of the form such as the candidate’s title, step, salary, etc.
  5. Complete the Host Campus Information portion of the Temporary Intercampus or Multi-campus Appointment form.  When listing the funding source include the systemwide translation for the IFIS FOPAL data
  6. After the Home Campus has completed the form, obtain a signature from your Department Chair/Program Director
  7. Route the form to Graduate Employment through Services and Support
  8. The Dean of Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs will review and make a decision on the form
  9. When official approval has been given by the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, the form will be returned to both the Home and Host Campus. 
  10.  The student can officially start working.  Discuss with the Home Campus who will submit the UCPath entry 

Note: An MLA form is only required if the student will be employed at more than one UC Campus at the same time.

  2. Academic Home Department will fill in the student's information and sign under the Home Department's signature
  3. Route the form to Graduate Employment through Services and Support
  4. The Dean of Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs will review and make a final decision on the form
  5. When official approval has been given by the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, the form will be returned to both the Home and Host Campus
  6.  The student can officially start working.  Discuss with the Host Campus who will submit the UCPath entry

  • The form must be approved by the UC San Diego Academic (Home) department (when applicable) and routed to the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs for the Dean’s approval.
  • The “Intercampus One-Time Payment Form (exhibit B in PPM 23-44) is usually not used for payments to graduate students.   To process the payment please refer to UCPath entry
  • Please allow 3-6 weeks for processing of Temporary Intercampus or Multi-campus Appointment requests
